LED Dynamo Flashlight: tuning and repairs – July 2011

Long before the idea of this website ever occurred to us, as a result of our mutual interest for ecological illumination (along with many other interests), we changed a LED flashlight with dynamo, a very cheap model, but whose performances we improved. Now, because of an accident, this flashlight had to be fixed – and it also got to be the subject of this article.

The history of the defect/ accident

The LED flashlight fell apart as a result of its smashing against concrete(*) – falling from about 1.2 m high – and all its guts spread all over the place, but, lucky us, they were all recovered. Continue reading “LED Dynamo Flashlight: tuning and repairs – July 2011”

Broken butt stock rifle – September 2009

For those fond of western movies, Henry repeating rifles and Winchester Lever-Action rifles are omnipresent easily recognizable elements. All the fights with Indians and most heroes use these carbines armed through the trigger guard. One of the modern movies (The Last Samurai (2003), Tom Cruise) shows the hero exhibiting such a weapon (I no longer know whether it was a Henry or Winchester rifle), and George Armstrong Custer lost the fight in Little Big Horn in front of Henry repeating rifles (and more than 1000 Indians…).
We have not managed to identify this model of rifle manufactured by Gonher, though we may suppose it was a Henry repeating rifle (according to its shape), and if you have suggestions, we are open to them.

History of defect/accident

As usual, the cause of the accident was the manner and purpose of use… In other words, a rifle (carbine) has several uses: as a bat, a lever, a small bench to sit on it, a shovel, an oar, or anything else crosses the mind of small cowboys. Noise making gun – November 2009

Weapon toys have a special place in our children’s preferences and choices (media has a lot to do with it), should they be cheap and badly made, or made of some breakable colourless plastic, or even representing something that doesn’t exist or is simply unbelievable. All these said (and we’ll say them again), we’ll now tell the story of a half failure, a repairing that didn’t last (obviously because of us). However, there were no noticeable dramas for the little one, who considered the whole thing so naturally as in “it broke, it was fixed, it broke again and now it’s working again”… As opposed to us, the old guys, taking too much pride in our skills…”If you’d done the way I told you….” or “ Nahh, eventually I was the one…”

The history of the defect/ accident

Seeing how the split looked like the first time, that toy must have been either sat on by one of the parents or turned it into mace by the kid. Continue reading “Noise making gun – November 2009”

Magnetic bracelet – February 2009

She arrived in time – such a small girl – holding its parts carefully, so that instead of receiving the string/bracelet in small pieces, what I received is what you can see here (still threaded).
We wondered: bracelet or beads, yet we reached no conclusion… Eventually, we called it bracelet because, functionally speaking, (the girl was wearing the bracelet) that’s what it was.

History of the defect / accident

Apparently, these gewgaws are not meant to live more than a couple of weeks maybe. It’s a good thing that those who make them don’t make bridges and airplanes… Continue reading “Magnetic bracelet – February 2009”

Faulty laptop video output – January 2009

One evening, this friend of mine called in for an emergency: there was this laptop, neither very new, nor extremely neat that had been acting up for a couple of days and needed to be taken care of. What I found out was something both random and repeatable: the systematic disruption of the image to the external monitor, or of the independent colors.

What happened?

Most owners strongly deny any “responsibility” for the cause of this defect – and this friend of mine made no exception to the rule. However, when asked if he uses a second monitor, he said he did, when he was playing. Continue reading “Faulty laptop video output – January 2009”

Hummer with broken wheel – December 2008

We are talking now about a Hummer HX Concept, Burago® product. It’s a model with metal body, PVC chassis and plexi windows. All the parts are fixed (no mobile doors or bonnet) except the wheels.
Technical data: Length = 90mm, Width = 40mm Height = 35mm and Weight = 65g.
Judging from the dimensions and finishing, it appears to be a simple toy car, and not a scale replica…

History of the defect / accident

The kid who own the car does not know (or does not say…) what happened, but it may have been stepped on or just pressed too hard… Continue reading “Hummer with broken wheel – December 2008”
